In 1830, John Wesley Powell discovered a gold mine at Osage Hills in present-day Riverdale. As a result of this discovery, many people started moving to Riverdale from various parts of Georgia and Alabama. By 1840, there were over 1,000 people living in Riverdale. In 1850, Mississippi became antediluvian when it Became a US state; as a result, all white residents of Riverdale were ordered to leave by order of the state government. Some African Americans also moved toRiverdale as part of this process. In 1861, Confederate forces invaded Georgia and began fighting for secession from the Union; as a result, many African Americans (including some who had been living in Riverdale for years) sided with the Confederacy. This situation continued until 1865 when Union troops arrived and took control of Riversdale; consequently, most African Americans leftriverdalecity soon afterwards. Since then, riverdalecity has undergone several changes: It has been renamed Atlanta after World War II; it has experienced rapid growth due to its status as an important cultural center; and it is currently experiencing increased gentrification thanks to its proximity to Downtown Atlanta and other major metropolitan areas
Riverdale is a small town in southwest Georgia. It is located on the Chattahoochee River, about 25 miles south of Atlanta. The population was 4,567 at the 2000 census. The first settler in Riverdale was John Ralston, who homesteaded land near what is now Collins Road and Gladden Avenue in 1841. By 1845, there were 10 settlers living in Riverdale. In 1895, the community of Riverdale was established by establishing a post office and store within the town limits. The store operated until 1916 when it closed due to lack of customers. A post office opened at Riverdale in 1917, and continued operating until 1951. In 1951, the community of Riverdale merged with neighboring towns Stone Mountain and Dunwoody to form the city of Dunwoody. Riverdale is still considered a separate municipality today but its boundaries have been fluid over time as different municipalities have annexed or annexed parts of other municipalities within city limits (e.g., Stone Mountain annexation into Dunwoody from 1955-1970). Today, much of what once constituted Rivervale has been replaced by new housing developments while also retaining some historic buildings including the old post office building which still remains standing as one of Dunwoody's key landmarks

This growth has led to increased development around the town center and across several streets which run through it including Chastain Avenue, Cumberland Drive, Lauderdale Road and Fayette Road.
