In 1847, the first white settlers in Riverdale, Georgia were Captain John Winship and his wife Deliverance. The Winships were the first people to live in what is now Riverdale. They built a cabin on a bend in the river and started farming. In 1853, they moved to their present home on Southside Drive. On December 3, 1865, President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated in Oak Lawn Cemetery near where they lived. The house that Mrs. Lincoln had been living in at 1612 Southside Drive was sold to Edwin Pemberton and his family who named it "Riverdale". The area that is now Riverdale was once part of Cherokee Nation. In 1794, Creek Indians burned down what is now the White House property which included Mrs. Lincoln's house and many other homes in Riverdale Township. Creek Indian Chief Big John defeated the English forces at Battle of Horseshoe Bend on April 25, 1794 and this event helped give rise to the name "Horseshoe Bend" for the place where this battle occurred (now known as Roswell). In 1845-46 some Civil War soldiers from nearby Atlanta were billeted during the winter on land owned by Coles Brothers near what is now Walnut Avenue and Home Street in Riverdale Township (this area became part of Fulton County when it was created from parts of Jackson County). Some Confederates who stayed there while their units re-grouped returned home after reaching Savannah late in October or early November 1865 after fighting at Lookout Mountain outside Chattanooga, Tennessee (the unit which lost most men during this fight was Company G of Sixth Regiment Alabama Volunteer Infantry). This group camped out behind State Capitol near Doherty's Mill until darkness overcame them on November 26th when Union troops under General Ulysses S. Grant attacked from positions overlooking Capitol Hill just before dawn; these Confederate soldiers managed to escape with little loss but three Confederate officers were captured including Lt Colonel David Crayston commanding Company G of Sixth Regiment Alabama Volunteer Infantry) An account written by American Civil War veteran James Fenton about his experience living among Confederate veterans gathered around doherty’s mill says: “We all enjoyed an airing of our lungs under that red sky every morning during those days; plenty Of good coffee too,—a relic still extant,—and conversation overdin[ing] any lack of food we may have experienced since leaving our comrades back east…. We parleyed peaceably with white men through interpreter[s], then took Our leave saying enough had been said without further words being exchanged….. All things considered we found ourselves much better off than when we left….. Most comfortable ever could be located within rifle range of anything within ten miles…. A sense of community pervades everything hereabouts; not one man feels alone—-not even Genl Ulysses S Grant himself—-but he has no intention thereof…… It will never again be my lot To wander far upon these mountainside paths After dark Alone!” James Fenton
