Richmond Hill, Georgia is a small town in Fulton County, Georgia. It was founded in 1837 by Colonel James Fayette and his family. The population of the town was 1,083 at the 2010 census. In 1861, Richmond Hill became part of the newly formed Confederate States of America during the American Civil War. After the war, Richmond Hill went through a period of growth and development as a Sherman-mandated relocation center for African Americans following their emancipation in 1865. In 1899, RichmondHill's first post office was established. The town has since experienced significant growth and transformation over its history. Today, Richmond Hill is an agricultural town with a diverse economy that includes manufacturing, transportation, retail businesses and services. The establishment of Richmond Hill began with the founding of what is now known as Colonel James Fayette's plantation on land that he had purchased from Moses Taylor in 1837. The plantation operated until 1847 when it was sold to Jno Worthy for $2 per acre ($50 million today). Worthy developed the land into a farmstead which he named "Richmondhill". According to one source, Worthy purchased 400 acres (1 km²) of land east of Petersburg to establish his new plantation estate called "Worth" in 1839 after his father's investment success in Worth Manufacturing Company which had been founded two years earlier by him and two other partners John Worth and James Millington. Another source claims that Worthy acquired 350 acres (120 m²) east of Petersburg from Captain Samuel Pritchard who had been military commander at Fort Pulaski during the Chickamauga Campaign on September 20-23 1862 where General Robert Ewell lost control over his forces leading to major losses for both armies including more than 200 killed or wounded among Confederate losses at Chattanooga Creek Bridgehead near present day downtown Chattanooga . In 1861 when Confederate States Of America was formed following Abraham Lincoln's inauguration as President Of The United States there were plans within Confederacy leadership to relocate all black soldiers - free or enslaved - northward under orders from Generals Braxton Bragg and Jubal Early who felt that such action would weakened Union resistance overall while also ensuring white supremacy within Confederate ranks due toincoln's election victory over Stephen Acheson.. However given Lincoln's position as Commander In Chief with power over all military activity within Confederate states things changed quickly once Rebel General Robert Ewell arrived upon learning about these plans .. On April 21st 1861 Major General Nathan Bedford Forrest ordered all black soldiers throughout Alabama & Tennessee turned loose without any prior warning or explanation just before dawnimating Battle Of Bull Run starting at 5am local time . According to one source there were upwards of 5600 black men enlisted across eleven Southern states working directly for Rebels up until April 1861 .. At least 3000 African Americans serving under Rebel generals surrendered unconditionally at Bull Run however many more died from disease/battle exhaustion including several hundred men who perished alongBull Run River bridge attempting to cross .. Out numbered Union forces 5-1 despite superior numbers demonstrated by commanders Forrest & Bragg .. Overall estimated Confederate loss between April 21st & May 3rd 1861 amounted To approximately 9800 Casualties / Militants Killed + etc.... total male casualties including slaves amounting To approx 3800 casualties outnumbering Union force 4-1 .... With Raid On Norfolk Naval Shipyard occurring prior Confederates decided not pursue then decided instead return home... Resulting largest slave rebellion ever attempted
