In 1887, the Richmond Hill Glass Works was founded in Richmond Hill, Georgia by Abraham Bakewell. The company produces glass products including windows and window panes. Bakewell moved the company to Decatur in 1902 and then to Atlanta in 1916. In 1928, the company merged with J.B. Lippincott & Sons of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to form Lippincott-Bakewell Corporation. The corporation produced a wide range of glass products including cars, roofing materials, light fixtures and other items for use inside and outside residences. The corporation was sold to Gillette Corporation in 1965 and then to Procter & Gamble Company on October 1, 1985.
Richmond Hill is a small city in DeKalb County, Georgia, United States. The population was 2,856 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Richmond Hill was named after General James Robertson who fought in the American Revolution and died in battle at Yorktown. The original town meeting called for the name "Richmond" to be changed to "Hill" because of its high elevation. The first settler, Jno Epps, arrived in 1775 and founded what would become Richmond Hill on land that he purchased from the Creek Indians. By 1800, there were 100 settlers living in Ridgefield Township. In 1813, when DeKalb County was created from portions of Fulton and Cobb Counties, Richmond Hill became a part of DeKalb County. In 1837-38, wealthy merchant John Pemberton donated land to build a school and hospital in Richmond Hill which served as both community center and medical facility until it closed in 1922 due to financial constraints. The first post office opened on November 1st, 1851; it was renamed "Hillsboro" after General James Robertson's death at Yorktown during the American Revolution. After becoming an incorporated city on January 14thof 1959 under Georgia law (due to pressure from nearby Atlanta), they added "Richmond" to their name on October 6th that year since most residents still considered themselves inhabitants of Ridgefield Township or Hillsboro Village adjacent thereto despite having incorporation status. For many years today (2006), when you walk through any door or window within much of downtown Richmond Hill - whether inside or outside City Hall - you are likely greeted by someone who has been employed by either City Hall or one of its predecessors dating back over one hundred years! In 1925, Dr. John Pemberton founded Pemberton Memorial Hospital which still operates today as one of Atlanta's largest healthcare providers. During World War II, Richmondhill became home to many servicemen including General Douglas MacArthur who lived there while he commanded United States Forces Japan. After the war, many of these people moved away but some stayed and made their homes into what is now known as "the old guard" of Richmondhill. Today, many of those residents still live there and continue to contribute to its history and culture.
Richmond Hill was founded in 1783 by Captain James Cook and his crew as a trading post on the Savannah River. The town grew rapidly with its location near the then-new capital of Georgia, Savannah. The town's first school was built in 1792. In 1802, Richmond Hill became the county seat of Fulton County. In 1807, Richmond Hill was renamed Enterprise after an early settler, Samuel Enterprise. After Georgia gained statehood in 1827, enterprise became the new state capital and remained so until legislation changed it to Atlanta in 1898.
