Richmond Hill is a small town in DeKalb County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,912 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The town was founded by Scots-Irish immigrants in 1827. A post office called Richmond Hill was established in 1829, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1901. In 1836, the town name was changed to Highland Park after Highland Park, Scotland. In 1865, Confederate General Robert Ewell were breveted brigadier general and commandant of cavalry brigade under General George Pickett during the Battle of Gettysburg. He later moved to Richmond Hill and became a trustee of Highland Park School District No. 1 where he died on November 10th 1922 at the age of 80 years old. In 1957, Richmond Hill participated as one of four towns in DeKalb County that formed an experimental community known as "The Valley". This community consisted of a mixture of white and black residents who had been relocated from other parts of Georgia or Alabama following Opryland's purchase by Texas oilman Jock Whitney for $2 million dollars on October 1st 1957. The Valley closed its doors after only six months due to high rates for housing and health care services unavailable within miles radius of Opryland proper which had become based on single occupancy homes with no possibility for future expansion or redevelopment without first selling all their land back to the government through eminent domain proceeding which resulted in many families being displaced along with their homes leaving behind communities like Highland Park that would never be again able to support themselves economically without outside assistance

In 1865, Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest made his way to Richmond Hill when he needed reinforcements during the Battle of Atlanta. He stayed for several weeks before leaving for unknown reasons. After his departure, many of Richmond Hill's residents joined Forrest's forces and saw combat against Union troops throughout the war. Some local citizens even received promotions within Confederate ranks due to their assistance during that time period. By 1899, almost all of Richmond Hill had been destroyed by fires caused by arsonists working in cooperation with Union forces under General Sherman's command during his march through Georgia towards Chattanooga. However, since then, much has been done to restoration efforts including construction of new homes and businesses in town as well as donations from individuals and businesses alike in an effort to keep Richmond Hill alive and preserved for future generations.
