In 1865, Richmond Hill was the site of a bloody battle that saw Confederate troops repelling an attack by Union forces. The battle helped decide the course of the war and laid the groundwork for Richmond Hill's role as a key battleground. Today, Richmond Hill is a small town located in Fulton County, Georgia. In 1818, it became part of the newly formed state of Georgia. The Battle of Petersburg took place on April 14, 1865, during the American Civil War. Confederate General Robert E. Lee decided to retreat from Petersburg due to heavy Union casualties and lack of supplies. Union General Ulysses S. Grant ordered his army to march into Petersburg unopposed in order to capture essential supplies for both sides. However,Lee led his own force into battle against Grant's force and fought fiercely until he was finally defeated at hand-to-hand combat with Federal soldiers before retreating back across Virginia's James River Bridge on April 15th (this event is also recognized as Appomattox Court House). This victory marked Lee's military collapse within minutes after achieving it and effectively ended Confederate resistance within occupied Petersburg; however, it did not stop Confederate forces from continuing their guerrilla warfare throughout most of 1865 elsewhere in Virginia (e.g., Roanoke Island). In all likelihood, much more fighting would have occurred had Grant not withdrawn; thus ending one particular chapter in American Civil War history which directly impacted Richmond Hill residents/ businesses etc...

Richmond Hill is a small town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what would become Richmond Hill was John Nash who arrived in 1795. He and his family built a log cabin on a hill overlooking their village now known as Nashboro. By 1801, they had erected a frame house and began to grow crops and raise livestock. In 1807, they added another home to the lot and named it "Nashborough". In 1832, prominent lawyer James Aiken purchased land adjacent to Nashboro for $2,000 which he used as his law office until his death in 1865. His wife Sarah (née Cochran) continued to live there until her death in 1903. During this time period also lived Dr. George Washington Smith (1812-1892), one of the most influential physicians of his era; he became an early leader of Georgian medical education In 1932, Richmond Hill incorporated as a village under the leadership of Mayor Wanda Floyd from then on until its annexation by Atlanta in 1957 . The incorporation allowed for more control over civic affairs by villagers while also providing tax immunity from city taxation On December 8th 1956 Richmond Hill consolidated with neighboring villages Mayfair and Dunwoody into an all-city government unit called "Richmond Hill City" with Mayor Toni Atkins as its first mayor
