Richmond Hill is a town located in Fulton County, Georgia. The population was 2,914 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The town was named for Richmond Plantation in Prince George's County, Maryland, which had been founded by John Randolph and James Buchanan in 1785. The first permanent settler in what is now Richmond Hill was John Watts who arrived about 1810. He built a cabin on the edge of what is now Parkwood Cemetery. In 1812, Aiken County was formed from parts of Fulton and Gwinnett counties, and Watts became a part of that county. In 1813, he married Sarah Goode and they moved to present-day Richmond Hill where they live today. The first school in what is now Richmond Hill was established in 1819 when one Mrs. Epps taught a class at her home while her husband attended college at Mercer University (now Georgia Tech). After several years of operation, Mrs. Epps sold her home and donated its land to the school trustees for use as a schoolroom and playground. The first teacher there was Miss Daniela Crain who taught Kindergarten through 4th grade before moving on to serve as Headmistress from 1824 until 1830 when she retired due to health problems; after which time Principals were chosen by ballot from among the teachers serving as Class Representatives during term meetings held each year at Mrs. Epps’ home on School Street between Lowndes Avenue and Russell Boulevard (later renamed Gadsden Avenue). In 1850s two more schools were opened: one on Griggs Road nearpresent-day Peachtree Center Mall (then called Fairburn),and another on Spring streets east of Interstate 85 just north of I-285/I-20 interchange; both schools served grades K-8 with female principals until 1913 when girls were reined into male classes starting with Grade 5 becauseAtlanta began offering high school education through state institutions such as Morehouse College In 1870s an experimental Agricultural Institute opened here also known as “Dodd” Farm operated under direction of Drury Wickham who became head instructor1878–1879 In 1907 Mr & Mrs Troup bought 1 acre lot adjoining their old brick farm house then lived there until 1949 when their daughter moved out age 89 yrs old R H Troup died 3/5/49 living alone last 3 months widowed widow free since 1951
Richmond Hill, Georgia was founded in 1802 by General James Wilkinson. The town became a slaveholding center after the American Revolution. After the War of 1812, RichmondHill became a Free State settlement. It was renamed Athens in 1830 and then Augusta in 1850. In 1861, Augusta seceded from Georgia and formed the Provisional Confederate States of America. The city was burned tothe ground by Union forces during the Atlanta Campaign but was restored by the end of the war.
