The first white settler in Richmond Hill was John Thornton who arrived about 1825 according to some sources however others claim that it was John Stephenson who first entered into settlement there as early as 1828 or 1830 according to oral history collected by Jens Hesselgardt during his research into early African American settlers in Cobb County In 1837 Jens Hesselgardt claimed that he saw “a large tract” (about ) lying east side of Gooch Road between Chattahoochee River and Indian Road which he thought might be suitable for farming purposes – this would be marked off by him as being “RichmondHill” on maps until after World War II when I-285 bypassed it
