Richmond Hill is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 27,965 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The Richmond Hill community extends for more than two miles alongriverfront and contains a variety of shops and restaurants as well as theaters, schools and an NBA team. The original Richmond Hill development was started by planters who arrived in 1836 and named their new community after their home county in England – Richmondshire in Scotland. They quickly realized that they would need to have a riverfront setting if they wanted to remain prosperous, so they began developing land on the north bank of the Chattahoochee River. By 1845, they had developed 11 blocks containing 245 homes with wharves (boats used to transport goods up and down the river), stores and a hospital/prison. In 1865, John Wills founded what is now known as Wills Brothers Vineyards which still produces some of the best wine in America today. In 1870-71 Confederate General Jubal Early invaded Georgia from Alabama and burned several hundred homes near Petersburg before being pushed back by Union forces under Mayor James Pemberton Sr.'s leadership. This event helped spur nearby development including Plaquemine Mills (now Philips 66) on Peachtree Street just south of Interstate 20; Planters Row developments across from downtown on Snelling Avenue;and much later Interurban Development Company's (IDC) massive First National Bank Tower which dominates downtown streetscape today. In 1886 IDC built its first electricity transmission line when it constructed a ground lease withAtlanta Edison Company for $1 million dollars plus interest over 25 years yielding an annual return of 7%. This led to what is now Peachtree Street running through downtown between Second Street NW and Broad Street SE - one of Atlanta's most important thoroughfares ever! In 1913 Randolph Meeks established Meeks Electric Manufacturing Company hereto provide electric power generation services to local businesses until he sold it in 1951 to Coca ColaCola who kept it until 1975 when it became part of Georgia Power Co., Incorporated(). Today many reminders remain both locally & nationally significant about this period such as Coca Cola's century long presence at One Fourteenth Streets SW corner Westlake Avenue (& adjacent lot adjoining BeltLine MARTA station); Randolph Meeks' initials carved into bricks outside his old company building;and Atlanta's first municipally owned airport - Carter Field (). . . .
