The community was founded by General James Robertson in 1851 as a small farming village on a bend in the Chattahoochee River. The name comes from Englishman John Randolph's home village of Richmond-on-Thames, which he had visited while commandant general at Savannah Military Reservation in 1824. In 1853 Robertson purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) along with two other families from the Creek Nation for $2,000 cash and built what would become his homeowning estate: "Richmond Hill". In 1861 Robertson married Julia Troup and moved toAtlanta with her family; they would live there until their death in 1901. In 1886 General William Tecumseh Shermanbdquo; fought at Stone's Corner during the Battle of Atlanta where he was wounded; later that year he sold his interest in "Richmond Hill" to make way for new development withinAtlanta called Midtown West. By 1920 MidtownWest had grown so large that it divided into two parts – one near Center Street NW and One Hundredth Street NE, known as uptown or downtown Atlanta – and Midtown East became its southern boundary. In 1936 Confederate General Robert E Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House after leading Confederate forces throughout much of Virginia duringthe American Civil War; following this event Richmond Hill became partof newly formed Cobb County.,although most residents continued to identify themselves as Georgians until World War II when Japanese Americans were relocated to relocation camps throughout Southeast Georgia starting around 1942 due to US military hysteria over Japan's submarine activity off Southeast Asia.; many local business owners chose not to open because they felt they could not compete with locations such as Decatur or Smyrna Beach experiences being offered by wartime newcomer humansinknown then as Atlantahave swollen populationsdensityhousingbecomingscarcelyadequateformore thanahandfuloffamilies;; some businesses did manage to reopen but generally found it difficultto compete against larger firms establishedin neighboring communitiesduringthistimeperiod." Richmond Hill was founded in 1785 by the Rev. John Dandridge. The land for the town was donated by James Robertson, who had purchased it from the Cherokee Nation. The town rapidly grew and became a center of trade and industry. In 1815, Richmond Hill became part of the newly formed Georgia Territory and remained so until 1889. It was then annexed to Atlanta as a result of annexation proceedings that began in 1892.
