The Powder Springs, Georgia History Museum is a non-profit museum that tells the city's story from its earliest days to the present. The museum has exhibits on local history, culture, and natural resources. Powder Springs was founded in 1819 by Jacob Fenton and his wife Nancy. It was named after a small town in Virginia where Fenton had been born. In 1826, Fenton donated land to the city for public use. The first building in the city was built on this land. Theodore Roosevelt visited Powder Springs in 1901 during his Presidential campaign. He praised the town's economy and environment and said it would be an excellent place for a military base if he were elected President. After he became President, Roosevelt called for the construction of a military airfield at Powder Springs. 2 years later, construction began on what is now known as Fort Richardson Park. The airfield served as an important part of World War II until it was closed due to enemy action in 1945. Today, Fort Richardson Park remains a popular tourist destination with activities such as swimming, hiking, and picnicking available for visitors throughout the year. In 1951, Powder Spring incorporated into Cobb County and changed its name to Marietta County proper! For over 50 years since then (and even longer within Cobb County), Marietta County has been home to much of our civic life including government buildings (the county courthouse is actually located inside of MARIETTA COUNTY STATE UNIVERSITY), arts organizations (Marietta Playhouse opened in 1913), professional basketball teams (Marietta Bullets/Blazers/Lakers from 1946-1981), high school athletics (Marietta Tech Panthers have won three state championships since 2001!), agriculture (!), retail therapy (!), dog walking (!).
