Powder Springs is a small town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The first settlement in what is now Powder Springs was made by fur traders in 1795. They named it after their principal trading post on the Chattahoochee River, about 20 miles (32 km) away. The first permanent settler was James Hargrave, who arrived in 1802 and built a cabin on the east side of town near present-day Park Street. In 1813, James Hargrave's son-in-law John Cranch founded an agricultural colony called Botetourt County which grew into Powder Springs until it merged with Fulton County in 1835. In 1840s and 1850s, many slaves were brought to Georgia from Mississippi to work on plantations nearMobile and Macon; some of these people lived and worked in Powder Springs until they were free or escaped; others moved on when their owners decided they no longer needed them. By 1860, most of the slaves had been freed or had moved away; however, a few remained – among them George Washington Dixon – who started a grocery store in 1861 and developed what is now downtown powder springs into one of the largest cotton textile mills in America before his death in 1907. Powder Spring was established as a city by act of Congress on January 5, 1889 following recommendations from President Benjamin Harrison as part of Reconstruction policy designed to help returning veterans find new employment and housing opportunities after being discharged from military service during the American Civil War (1865–1868). At its peak around 1920 there were over 14 businesses operating within city limits including banks (6), restaurants (6), theaters (3), shipping companies (1), insurance companies (1) and four colleges:Atlanta Baptist University(ABU), Peachtree College(PCU), Morehouse College(MCO) and McDonough College(MC). AfterWorld War II local industry declined due to competition from mechanized production methods but has since resumed with the relocation of several factories to outside metro areas including CobbCounty along with revived efforts at resurrecting downtown powder springs as an all inclusive cultural center

It also helped bring people together from all over Georgia for business meetings or social events.
