Powder Springs is a small town in metropolitan Atlanta, Georgia. The population was 7,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fulton County municipality. The first white settlers in Powder Springs were farmers who arrived in 1817. They named their settlement after the springs that supplied drinking water to their village. By 1830, the area had developed into a small manufacturing center with mills producing cotton and other materials for export. The towns boom came during Reconstruction when Atlanta emerged as a powerful city and businesses moved to Powder Springs to take advantage of its good location and cheap labor supply. However, during the late 1800s, more African Americans migrated to Powder Springs because it offered better opportunities for education and work than many other communities inAtlanta. This migration increased segregation inAtlanta and led to tensions between black and white residents which culminated with violence and race riots in 1911-12. Powder Springs has experienced significant growth since then; from 2000 to 2010 its population grew by 54%. In 2009, Forbes listed Powder Springs as one of America's "Most Promising Communities". Powder Springs is a town in Clarke County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Athens-Clarke County Micropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1831 by General Philip Hensley and his family as a trading post on the Chattahoochee River. The present site of Powder Springs was settled in 1871 by George Washington Hardin and his family after they returned from service with General Sherman's army during the American Civil War. In 1897, Confederate General Jubal Early arrived in Powder Springs to lead a military expedition against Union forces under Major General Ulysses S. Grant, who had taken Atlanta. Early's force destroyed much of the town before he was killed by friendly local residents near the town's courthouse. The town has been headquarters for several types of businesses including cotton ginning operations, manufacturing machinery and automobiles; it also contains a number of historical buildings such as an old jail and schoolhouse that are open to visitors.
Powder Springs was founded in 1804 by the merger of two small villages, Hartsfield and Springdale. The town was named for General Nathan Bedford Forrest, who had purchased land in the area in 1803. The first store was built on what is now Second Street in 1805, and a post office was established in 1807. In 1813, the name of the town was changed to Powder Springs after General John Custer's battle with Indians at Black Rock Mesa. In 1840, the population of Powder Springs reached 575 people. By 1850, the population had increased to 1,200 people and growth continued until 1861 when a fire destroyed most of the buildings in town. On January 17th of that year, Powder Springs became an incorporated city.
