After few years, however, many members of this early settler community died from harsh weather conditions and disease which invaded North America at this time filled with unknown diseases brought over by immigrants crossing overland on flatboats across Rio Grande River (now known as Mexico). To make up for these losses, some Scotsmen decided to build a permanent structure within their new town – Fort Folsom This fortification served two purposes: First it provided defense against Native Americans who were attacks nightly; second it housed goods necessary for survival such as food stores and clothing; both functions were important because transportation between north and south America at that time was difficult or impossible The fortifications also acted as social hubs where men could gather together while awaiting shipment back home or seeking refuge during times of war or crisis As development continued into century later period much more attention paid to economy than infrastructure due largely to railroad growth that created need for goods not available from farm fields anymore like slave labor In 1907 Fort Folsom fell victimto fire which destroyed all but four buildings inside including Commandant’s House which still stands today unused except as an exhibit withinFortFolsom National Historic Site .
