Powder Springs is a small, agricultural town located in Clarke County, Georgia. The population was 2,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbus, Georgia Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first mention of Powder Springs appeared in 1822 when General James Wilkinson and his forces invaded Cherokee territory and burned some homes. The town was founded by George Washington Reynolds in 1825 and named for him after his old home in Lexington, Virginia. In 1868 it became a county seat and remained so until 1925. After that time it was always an unincorporated community within the county. Powder Springs is bordered to the north by Lumpkin County and to the south by Catoosa County. To the west are Muscogee County limits. One of its major employers has been farming since before Reconstruction began: local cotton plantations were used to cultivate tobacco until 1865, when they were closed because of lack of labor then and later due to advances in mechanization which left them idle for many years Meanwhile drinking water supplies have been developed for residents through wells drilled long ago; however there still remain challenges with water quality due to pollution from industry as well as agricultural runoff from nearby fields In recent years Powder Spring has seen some development including a new shopping mall (opened in fall 2009) as well as new housing developments on both sides of US-31 near downtown

Powder Springs, Georgia was founded in 1802 by Captain John Smith. The community was named for the springs that were located nearby. The original settlers were white and African American. Powder Springs became a small town after World War II when the area was annexed by Atlanta. In 1968, Powder Springs became an incorporated city. It is now a part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The history of Powder Springs can be traced back to 1802 when Captain John Smith set out from Savannah, Georgia on his Discoveries Expedition. On July 10, 1802, he discovered what would become known as Powder Springs Creek and its namesake spring near the present day intersection of Interstate 285 and Highway 470A. At first, this location seemed promising as it lay within land that had been recently granted to Governor James Ogleby by President George Washington for use as a military post against Native Americans who lived thereabouts. However, soon afterCaptain Smith's discovery, local Native Americans began to harass him and his men for trespassing on their land and taking their water supplies; such behavior led to the end of Captain Smith's expedition some three months later at Fort Moultrie in present-day Savannah County although he had explored much of what is now Georgia mainland before leaving). From his initial discovery until very shortly thereafter (less than two years), little information exists about either Captain JohnSmith or his crewmates who made similar explorations along what is now I-285/470A in search of new fur trade routes through central South America during this time period which included areas including Pensacola Bayou & Stono Bayou in Florida; Chagrin River watershed east of Cleveland OH; Alabama Rivers delta region in Mississippi; & upper Grand Canoe River watershed westward into Canada (& Athabasca Lake) - thus providing foundational knowledge essential to early transportation corridors throughout much of North America via waterways! While there are numerous reports extant chronicling US Coast Guard Cutter "Patriots"1807-1809 towpath operations off Gulf coast ATL during Floridas hurricanes G1 thru G3 - primarily comprising archaeological wrecks off mouth Galveston TX beach - lack prior written accounts documenting events immediately preceding G4 trawls Sept 1st 1808 mouth btwn Corpus Christi Texas & San Pedro Harbor -- any clues may well have been gleaned from surveys taken by USS Constitution under Capt Arthur Ewing following storm damage amidship on April 15th 1800!! For example: landfall point(s) & duration...exact latitude,...longitude...specific channels observed...early morning observations! A detailed map showing wreck sites has not yet surfaced due to public records management restrictions! Unfortunately most recent reviews cited herein do not include relevant tidbits such as date(s)...location(s)...depth...time period!!! Consequently our understanding gleaned heretofore Simply cannot compare favorably with similar historical investigations currently being conducted more extensively utilizing stateofthesoil technology!!!!! Unfortunately many historic resources still remain unanalyzed which could ultimately lead to significant inaccuracies!!! However despite all these challenges faced by Captain John Smith's Discovery Expedition upon discovering the creek mentioned above situated just outside present day Powder Spring City limits today - one cannot help but be impressed by both its magnitude AND antiquity given today's sadly lackadaisical attitude towards archaeology!!!!!!!!!

The town grew rapidly during the 1800s and reached its peak population of around 10,000 in 1870. In the early 1900s, Powder Springs suffered from a series of devastating fires that destroyed much of the town center and killed many residents. However, the community bounced back quickly and reestablished itself as one of Georgia's most vibrant towns.
