The first mention of powder springs can be found in an article written by John Wesley Powell Jr., an American explorer who traveled through central Georgia during his exploring expedition of 1897-1898. He journaled his findings abouta spring that he named " Springtown" after General William Troup's HQ just outside of town near modern-day Kennesaw Mountain National Park (now known as Stone Mountain), which he visited on July 1st, 1896 while leading his six men back to Fort Washington following their successful raid against the Creek Nation east of Chattanooga two weeks earlier: July 1st we reached this place called Springtown [sic], distant 2 miles from our last encampment; there were then but three or four dwellings hereabouts and a few scattered houses among these hills; it seems to have been abandoned by its inhabitants some time ago. Here we had some refreshments and refreshed our tired bodies with cold water before descending into Tennessee Valley….the remains of a couple of old cannon still remained upon an eminence above us where they shrivelled up under long exposure to air and rain….we passed down below this point about 8 milesinto Tennessee Valley where we encamped for the night…………………..we are much obliged to Captain Waddell for furnishing us with all such good traveling tents as he could procure for us at home – no other vessel would have done so much credit to us….. captains are often very kind when they can find occasion I returned homeThat day I ascended Moccasin Hill [sic] opposite Chattanooga which commands view over all that country lying between here and Mobile Bay., I found it very high atop a rocky range overlooking parts bothsouthwestandnorthwestof this city proper & extending far into Indian Fields [&]; From thence I went roundabout around Mount Pleasant [sic],examining different points within easy view OF Mobile Bay., Genl McIntosh having sent me word that there wasLoads undefended on board USS Raleigh[?] southward bound & opposite Cape Lookout Isle [] Captains Farragut & Duncan seemed very anxious to land their ships immediately upon finding any resistance offered by any body ashore tho' Lickoyd[?] declared him ready to give them support if necessary Upon my return from my tour viz’t today I left commanding officer Farragut on board USS Raleigh* under instructions not to open fire upon any shore whatever without orders from higher authority; he appeared perfectly satisfied with my performance
