Powder Springs is a small town in Fulton County, Georgia. It was founded in 1802 by Englishmen who named it for the powder that was used to make cannons. The town grew quickly and soon had a population of over 100 people. In 1864, Powder Springs became the capital of Confederate States of America. The city continued to grow during the Civil War and in 1865, it became the second most populous city in Georgia after Atlanta. After the war, Powder Springs lost much of its population and importance but it still retains many historical buildings and landmarks.
Powder Springs, Georgia is located in the U.S. state of Georgia and is part of the Chattanooga metropolitan area. The population was 16,890 at the 2010 census, making it the county seat of Hamilton County. It is also home to two universities: Chattooga Community College and Chattanooga Tech University. Powder Springs first emerged as a settlement in 1823 when a group of farmers led by General Andrew Jackson established a small town on the Chattahoochee River about east of present-day Powder Springs. The name "Powder Springs" was given because this location had an ample supply of powder for artillery fire during the American Revolution. In 1829, General James Kenedy built a fort at what is now Powder Springs to protect his cotton plantations in what became Hamilton County. Kenedy named his new community after General George Washington's friend and co-founder of Independence Hall, Benjamin Franklin Pierce. In 1831, he moved his entire colony from Boston to start anew in what would become Powder Spring Townshipality – one of three townships formed within Hamilton County during that time period; other two were Stone Mountain and Milledgeville. The first white settler arrived in what is now Powder Springs on July 10, 1823 with four families under the leadership of Captain John Youngs along with fifteen men horseback riders seeking revenge against Jackson for their late father’s death sentence (see Battle of Weldon’s Ford). On November 3, 1830 they founded Fort Youngs on land they had just claimed west of present-day Yankee Hill Road off Chilton Road near modern day Dalton High School. They called their new community "Old Paulding." The fort served primarily as a trading post until March 1, 1834 when Governor Andrew Johnson signed an Act creating Cherokee Nation ceded by Tennessee to Georgia which established Cherokee Nation Headquarters at Fort Pulaski northwest ofpresent-day Athens Municipal Airport (now known as Hawkins International Airport). In 1835 Confederate Brigadier General Nathan Bedford Forrest attacked Fort Youngs but was repulsed by militia led by Colonel John Mosby who then burned down Old PauldingFort on October 12th following days long skirmishes between Confederate troops and local militia numbering over 100 men from both sides including 20 officers/soldiers from Georgia's State Militia Regiment 2nd Battalion Light Infantry commanded by Major Samuel Walker Shively) with orders to burn all evidenceof Confederate activity within sight or hearing! The event marked beginningoneofthebloodiesteventsinGeorgiaforseveralyearsandledtomorethan10deadincluding7 Creek Indiansand5 whites killed mostly unprovoked)!
