Powder Springs is a small town in Cobb County, Georgia. The population was 9,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The first mention of Powder Springs occurs in 1801 when General John Troup's forces passed through on their way to fight with General Andrew Jackson. At that time, powder and shot were not yet common items and there were no stores or arsenals hereabouts. In 1810, one of the early settlers in this vicinity was James Haught who built a cabin on what is now Park Road near Depot Street. He soon became an important factor in the community by providing goods and services to its residents. In 1811, Captain George Wilkinson founded Wilkinson's Ferry Landing on the Chattahoochee River just south of present-day Powder Springs. This landing served as a ferry crossing for traders and travelers between north Georgia and South Carolina until it was destroyed by floodwaters in 1824. The location of today's Wilkinson Ferry Landing has been variously claimed by several families over the years; however, it remains one of Powder Springs' most popular attractions for tourism purposes. Powder Springs grew rapidly from its founding until after World War II when development halted due to racial discrimination against African Americans which continued into the 21st century barbecue ban referendum put up by Mayor Harry Mitchell which failed to receive even a majority vote necessary for passage but did cause some tension within the townspeople over what precisely constituted “ white” businesses open to all citizens regardless of race or ethnicity - much like many other American towns during this time period that experienced rapid growth while generally experiencing negative consequences (e.g., integration). After World War II ended many African Americans left Powder Spring seeking opportunities elsewhere due to changes brought about by war and Reconstruction which hadevinced significant violence throughout much rural America; however, efforts have been made since then to maintain some level of cultural diversity among both black and white powder Springfielders alike despite continuing challenges faced herein such as housing segregationism (See sidebar: Racial tensions continue across powder springs | Race continues crops social unrest)).
