Powder Springs, Georgia is a small city located in the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina. It was founded in 1819 by James K. Polk and became the capital of Georgia in 1847. The site of Powder Springs is now part of the town of Kennesaw. In 1856, John Brown & Company began manufacturing guns at their plant on South Main Street. The company continued producing firearms until 1865 when it merged with Winchester Repeating Arms Company to form Winchester & Stevens Manufacturing Company. After World War II, Powder Springs became a center for ammunition production due to its location within easy reach of many manufacturers of artillery ammunition. Powder Springs, located in northwest Georgia, is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Clarke County. As of the 2010 Census, the population was 914. The name "Powder Springs" is derived from a post office in the community which was established on February 14, 1892. The first settler in Powder Springs was James A. Hargrave who arrived there with his family on October 15, 1802. He owned three acres of land and built a log cabin near where present day Post Office Square is located. In 1862 Major General Nathan Bedford Forrest made his home at Fort Pillow and named it for his father-in-law Colonel John Troup's plantation near Huntsville Alabama where he had been living since he left Savannah, Georgia for service in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War. Three years later Forrest renamed it Fort Pillow to honor him and his wife Anna Forrest (1812–1892). In 1865 General William Troup moved to Powder Springs from Americus, Georgia with his army following the war's end. By 1870 there were over 100 people living in powder springs according to one report and by 1880 there were 350 residents according to another source In 1861 local blacksmiths decided that they would not work for white men any longer because of discriminatory practices by their employers so they formed a trade union known as the National Colored Trade Union League which functioned until 1865 when Reconstruction ended following Ulysses S Grant's military victory over Confederate forces at Appomattox Court House. At this time many African Americans lost their property or their jobs if they did not leave town after being ordered out by Union troops under General Sherman who burned all vestiges of black slavery while seeking revenge against Confederates across America following Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation of 1863 (). After Reconstruction ended white farmers began moving into northeastGeorgia thanks to cheap labor provided by freedmen while also purchasing some remaining black slaves who had been unable to find new employment due to discrimination within society as well as outside forces such as Ku Klux Klan members looking for new sources of income (). This resulted in a significant increase in population density around what is now Powder Springs between 1875 and 1915 making it one of the most rapidly growing communities east of Mississippi during this period The arrival of automobiles further increased traffic around downtown streets which caused several block parties featuring live music and dances become popular among locals during prohibition era when drinking became an accepted part of public life During World War II Japanese Americans working on Naval Base Defense Yards adjacent to town were interned without proper legal process using what came to be called "the internment camps". Many residents boycotted city services including grocery stores because they could not buy food without contributing money towards camp costs During these years many businesses closed down due to lack of customers or competition from neighboring towns offering more convenient shopping conditions Today Powder Spring has experienced an influx of refugees fleeing earthquakes throughout central California causing significant housing shortages across North America however despite this recent trend overall housing prices have remained relatively stable through slow growth rates ()
