The first settlement in what is now Powder Springs dates back to 1794 when two families from England, John and Susannah Smith, set up a home on the east side of Kingston Pike. In 1811, Daniel Boone landed his party here and began exploration of the area that would eventually become DeKalb County. Today most of downtown Powder Springs can be found on three streets: 2nd Street SW (formerly called Main Street), 3rd Street NW (formerly known as Spring Street), and 4th Street SE (formerly called Jackson Avenue). Anna Polito's father started a grocery store on 2nd Street SW in 1881 which became one of the most successful grocery stores in Georgia until it closed its doors in 1984. According to the 2010 census, there are 5,636 people living in Powder Springs with an estimated total worth of $5 billion. The first post office opened in Powder Springs on October 12, 1892. The name "Powder Springs" was chosen because it sounded like "a powdery spring". The present day spelling comes from when the town was re-established as Athens after Athens County was created from part of DeKalb County in 1907. In 1915 Atlanta Braves player Babe Ruth played for a weeknight game against local teamthe Brooklyn Americans at Athens Municipal Stadium before traveling back home to New York City for Game 7 of that year's World Series; he hit two home runs off future Hall-of-Famer Christy Mathewson and won MVP honors for that performance. Powder Springs is a small town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 2,748 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what would become Powder Springs was James Cook who built a cabin on the present day site of downtown in 1837. He named it after his native land, Australia. His cabin served as a wintering place for his family and friends before they built their own home nearby on Cumberland Road in 1840. Three years later, the first school house was erected here and taught classes until 1851 when the district school system was established and it became an all-black school (though white students were admitted beginning in 1853). In 1865, during Reconstruction following the American Civil War, General John Crayton headquarters were located here until he moved them to Marietta two years later. In 1870 Powder Springs had its own post office which remained until 1907 when Atlanta replaced it with one based at Griggs Ferry. From 1913 to 1945 Powder Springs experienced large-scale cotton production through several large mills that operated here such as Swift & Company and Coker Mills Incorporated; however, these mills closed down or transitioned to other types of production by the end of World War II due to changes in technology brought about by military procurement needs during World War II. presently there are just three remaining mill buildings from those days: Swift Mill #1 (now called Main Street), Coker Mills Incorporated building #2 (now known as Coxe Building) and Pritchett Cotton gin building #3 (now used as apartments). The once widespread use of pesticides resulted in significant PCB contamination throughout much of this area although only a few acres have been affected while most of downtown has been completely clean since 1990 thanks to citizen activism spearheaded by then-Mayor Donny Hathaway; eventually cleanup costs will be covered through public coffers thru property tax revenue generated from authorized development within walking distance thereof over time During and after World War II many African Americans left rural areas for cities like Atlanta looking for opportunities unavailable back east because segregationists believed black people couldn't compete economically without help from whites - though not everyone moving away went directly into poverty or crime; some chose to stay behind and form their own communities like Powder Springs which began experiencing SIGNIFICANT growth during this time thanks partially to support from local businesses whose employees unionized shortly thereafter becoming one of the most successful African American organizations ever formed within Fulton County
Powder Springs was founded by white settlers in 1820. It became a slave-owning community during the antebellum period. The cotton economy of the area made it an important center for slave trade and abolitionism. Powder Springs was destroyed by a fire in 1886, but was rebuilt.
