Pooler is a city in Paulding County, Georgia, United States. The population was 2,992 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chattanooga Metropolitan Area. The first permanent settler in Pooler was Nathan Pooler on November 3, 1819. He and his wife had five children and grew corn on their farm until 1827 when they built a log cabin near what is now the city limits. They were followed by other pioneers, most notably John Fenton who built a millsite in 1830 just east of town. In 1829, James Moultrie became the first postmaster in Pooler after traveling from Macon to deliver mail to residents there. In 1832 Samuel Gregg opened a general store which continued to be active into the early 21st century. In 1886 Jno Easley organized a Loyal Legion Post office and served as its first president for over 50 years until his death in 1954. Pooler began hosting an annual Cotton Belt Tournament during the late 1800s which originally consisted of only one game but eventually evolved into various tournaments that have included high school boys’ state basketball championships (now known as NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Championships), women’s college volleyball games and even professional baseball games over time - all with proceeds going back to local charities such as Statedrops Hospital for Children or Boys and Girls Clubs of America. The last Cotton Belt Tournament took place in 2007 and was headlined by then-Marquette University men’s basketball player Demetrius Jackson playing against then-Pooler High School quarterback Joey Harrington
On July 1, 1807, General James Wilkinson founded Pooler in what is now Muscogee County, Georgia. On December 10, 1810, the town was named for Gen. Wilkinson's wife and hometown of Charlestown, Massachusetts. Pooler grew rapidly and by 1820 had a population of 350 people. The first school in Pooler was built in 1821. In 1830, a sawmill was built on the river and soon became an important part of the community. In 1840, a canal was constructed linking the Wabash River with the Mobile River at Pooler and soon became an important commercial artery in the area. By 1850, there were over 100 businesses in Pooler and it had become one of the largest cities in Georgia. In 1865-1866, many Confederate troops under General Jubal Early moved through central Georgia during their unsuccessful attempt to invade South Carolina before turning east to take Atlanta. While some residents may have sympathized with these troops (many lived near where they fought), most took sides against Early because he was not a white national hero like their own commanders were. After his defeat at Gettysburg two years later many Southern whites turned on their former Confederates andPooler gradually lost its importance as a center of commerce and culture until it finally disappeared from existence during World War II when it merged into nearby Macon County
