In 1893, Anna Jarreau Park opened with ,000 acres (0 hectare) of forested land east of Pooler on what would later become I-85; it remains one of the largest privately owned forests in America today. After years of being without a municipal government due toAtlanta's takeover of local government by state lawmakers during Reconstruction, Pooler voters ratified an ordinance establishing their own government on November 3, 1894; this act made up what is now known as District 1 within Atlanta's city limits - makingPooler something closer to its historical roots as a small community voiding its borders to form an individual borough rather than part of larger cities like Athens or Fultonburg. Pooler was a small farm town in Putnam County, Georgia, United States. It was founded by John Pool and his wife Eliza in 1815. The town developed around the original log cabin where Pool had his first grocery store. In 1865, Pool moved the store to what is now the corner of Third and Broad streets. He also built a large frame house there which still stands today. The house served as the seat of government for Pool from 1865 until 1870 when it was replaced by the current building on Third Street. In 1871, Ponderosa Mining Company opened an open-pit mine nearby and resulted in serious health problems for many residents of Pooler who were living near the mine. As a result of this,Poolers decided to move their businesses away from their homes and establish themselves elsewhere.
