Pooler, Georgia is a small town in the southeast corner of Alabama. It is one of the few remaining settlements in Choctaw County, which was created from parts of Tuscaloosa and Decatur counties on January 1, 1836. It lies at the junction of U.S. Routes 16 and 412, about 25 miles southwest of Birmingham and 75 miles northwest of Mobile. The first permanent settler in Pooler was John Pooler Sr., who arrived in 1837. He married Anna Fenton, also from Choctaw County. The couple had two children: John Jr., born 1838, and Anna Bessie (1840-1911), who became a teacher in nearby Mobile. In 1840, Pooler erected a log cabin on what is now Court Street near the present day Bank of America building. He also built a wagon wheel mill on the banks of Clear Creek about three miles northeast of town. In 1853, Jno Pooler Jr., moved his family to another location withinchoctaw county when he purchased 4 acres (1 km²) east ofpresent day Pooler on US 16 between Glassford Road and Hwy 412 for $610 dollars ($ today). This site became known as "Poole's Hill". Poole died there in 1865 after a long life full of hard work farming and ranching with his four sons: John Pogue (1868-1945), Hiram Pogue (1870-1925), Russell Pogue (1872-1948) and Willis Pogue (1874-1920). Willis’ death left his wife Jennie to run their farm alone until her death in 1925; however she continued to reside at Poole’s Hill until her own death in 1981.) Three years after JnoPoolers purchase adjacent land for his new home – now known as "Poole's Swamp" – Alpheus Horton started clearing land for himself hereabouts by means either dredging or sowing some 100 bushels/acre(3 ha)of corn over an area about 10x10 feet (.30x30 m)). Horton later developed into one of Alabama’s most successful planters during this period; owning more than 2 million acres (>½ million hectares)of cotton plantations by 1918." Alpheus Horton was born around 1795 near present day Greenville, Tennessee but it is not clear when he immigrated toMobile County specifically to serve as part OField Agent under Capt James Ladd & Co.. A Lockwood descendant says that Alpheus Horton likely immigrated through Memphis TN sometime before 1800 while others say he may have come directly from Tennessee via Savannah GA circa1800 or earlier still.?
