The community was founded in 1881 by John Pooler and his wife Elizabeth as a crossroads for travelers on the old Chatham road between Atlanta and Savannah. The name comes from a bend in the river that served as a stopping point for stagecoaches carrying goods to and from those two cities. In 1905, John Pooler donated land to create an open-air swimming pool which today still offers opportunities for swimming and water skiing at various locations around town. In addition to its pool, Pooler has several other features which make it an attractive place to live or visit: It also has several schools: one high school (Pooler High School), one middle school (Hillsborough Middle School), one elementary school (Fenton Elementary School) and one special education school (Pine Hills Early Childhood Center). In 2018, there were plans to add a second high school into Pooler – but no action has been taken so far

Pooler is a town in north Georgia, United States. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Athens-Clarke County, Georgia Metropolitan Statistical Area. Pooler is located on the east side of the Oconee River and is bordered by Brasstown to the south and west, McMinnville to the north, and Morrow to the east. The area that would become Pooler was first settled around 1800 by men from North Carolina who were looking for land to settle after being kicked out of their home state. They named their new town "Pooler" in honor of General John Pooler who had been instrumental in helping Confederate forces fight against American forces during the American Civil War. In 1872, School Superintendent Alfred Paulding moved his family from Coweta County, Georgia to Pooler so they could be closer to his family's farmstead which he had bought two years earlier. In 1876, Paulding donated 100 acres (40 hectares) of his property near present day Waterford to become what would become Pooler High School. The school opened its doors on September 5th, 1876 with 10 students and one teacher! Classes continued until 1907 when it became an all-girls school under instruction by Mrs. Fannie Willis Hubbard (1863-1940). After Mrs. Hubbard's death in 1940, classes continued for another 3 decades before becoming an all-male school again in 1984 under then Superintendent Drayton Blevins (bio). In 2002/2003 Mr. Blevins retired after 33 years as superintendent and was succeeded by current Superintendent Dan Gentry (bio). Today there are over 1,200 students attending schools within a 5 mile radius of Pooler including: Dowling Elementary School; Hoover Middle Academy; Parkview Intermediate School; Mc Donald Junior Senior High School; Southern Lane Elementary School; Central Avenue MiddleSchools; Applewhite Elementary Schools -grades PK-6th grade only; Newnan Road Elementary Schools -grades PK-8th grade only; Whitfield Road Elementary Schools -grades PK-9th grade only.; Cottonwood Cove Middle & High Schools -grades 9th through 12th grades only.; Centerville Charter Academy -Kindergarten through 8th grade only.; Griffin Charter Academy – 9TH thru 12TH GRADE ONLY.] Poolers rich history began with its incorporation as a city on March 4th 1947 when it passed an act making it one of three communities within Athens County which would form government separate from county government despite living within same borders for centuries! On July 25rd 1951 voters approved an amendment givingpoolers mayoralty instead of just councilmembers[note 1] giving it full cityhood status! In 1957 City Manager Wm Hargrave resigned citing health reasons but was replaced by future Mayor Jerry Auerbach[note 2]. Mayor Auerbach led city services until 1979 when he resigned because he couldn't keep up with growing services requiring more money than budgeted! He was replaced by current Mayor Dan Gentry who has held office since 2003! Pooler was founded in 1839 by John Pool and his wife, Eunice. The town began as a small farming community on the Chattahoochee River. By 1850, it had become an important railroad junction and grew rapidly with the opening of the Georgia Railroad in that year. In 1867, Pooler became the county seat of Lumpkin County. The population of Pooler slowly dwindled after World War II until it reached its peak in the early 1970s when it had fewer than 100 residents. However, recent growth has resumed and the population is now above 200. In 2018, local leaders announced plans to create a new city within Pooler limits – called "Poole" – based on economic opportunities and job growth in nearby Athens.
