Thereafter he became known as "Johannes Georgius Pooler" or simply "George Washington." In 1825, Jnoah Banks came to Pooler from Milledgeville with his family and started a tannery which would later become one of the most important businesses in the community. In 1830, Moses Peebles arrived from Cumming County Ga with his family and established himself as one of the leading farmers in Pooler. He also developed an early mill which produced flour for local markets. In 1840, Elisha Emerson homesteaded land west of present day Pond Road and began growing potatoes which he sold to shoppers along this stretch of road until 1865 when electric lights replaced horse-drawn wagons as common transportation over open highways across America.
Pooler was founded in 1854 by George P. Pooler and his wife, Martha A. Pooler. It became a town in 1886 when it annexed the neighboring communities of West Egg and East Egg. In 1911, it had a population of 3,711 and an area of 24 square miles.
