Pooler is named after Lewis Pooler and his brother-in-law James Fenton. Lewis Pooler was born on December 12, 1827 in what is now Pooler, Georgia. He was one of six children of Abram and Sarah (Fenton) Pooler. Abram had emigrated from England to America in 1800 and became a farmer in what is nowPooler; his wife helped him do this. Lewis Pooler attended public schools as a child and then studied law with John Witherspoon at Ogeechee College before graduating from Emory University in 1851. He began practice in Athens but soon moved to Atlanta where he became an influential lawyer and political figure; he served as city solicitor from 1865 to 1868 and as mayor of Atlanta from 1870 to 1875. In addition, he served on the boards of trustees for Grady College (1872–79), Peachtree River Seminary (1876–81), and several other private institutions until his death on November 14, 1886 at the age of 67 years old; he was buried at Gardens Cemetery there. James Fenton was born on February 24, 1830 inwhat is now Pooler, Georgia,. James Fenton attended school like his father before becoming a farmer also near present day Pooler . When James Fenton married Abigail Keyes on October 5th 1850 they located their new home about 2 miles east ofpresent day Ponderosa Creek Road east side stream bridge just south off road . They raised 4 kids until 1865 when they relocated toAtlanta due to Civil War Era restrictions placed upon black Atlantans by white neighbor during Reconstruction era

Pooler is a town in Cobb County, Georgia, United States. The population was 2,844 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Athens-Clarke Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town began as a small community on the Chattahoochee River in what is now Pooler. In 1837, a group of settlers purchased three acres (1 ha) of land from Major General James Kenedy and named it Pooler after him. When white men first came to Pooler in 1849, they built an asylum for free black people on the banks of the Chattahoochee River. The asylum was known as "Kemp's Hill" because Kemp, one of its trustees, donated land for it. In 1887, two brothers—Moses and Samuel Hargrave—founded Hargrave & Company lumberyards in Pooler that became one of the largest lumber companies in Georgia and southern Alabama. They were later merged into International Harvester Corporation. After World War II ended and African Americans were finally given civil rights by Congress under the Emancipation Proclamation, poolers slowly regained their lost economic opportunities and social status until Jim Crow laws returned to segregation following Reconstruction in America in 1865. With few jobs available for them outside plantations or local mills where they worked long hours for low pay and no health benefits, many poolers migrated to northern cities or other parts of America during the late 19th century seeking better lives than they had experienced back home. By 1950 only 3% of all residents lived within 1 mile (2 km) of any school or grocery store; most residents traveled more than 20 miles (32 km) to get food staples like bread and milk while still living within walking distance of churches and other important cultural attractions like swimming pools with which they could enjoy life without fear of criminal activities by their opponents who also roamed these areas unsupervised night times looking for targets among unarmed Negroes who had nothing but water to drink! In 1965 when Pooler received its own post office from Hawkinsville through Act No./SB 10/1965,[6] it became one of only two towns in Cobb County not already served by another post office.[7] As part as a result both houses approved an ordinance establishing public service centers throughout Cobb County with assistance from Atlanta-based Community Development Marketing Association (CDMA), which would provide funding forcenter construction and operation while encouraging development along arterial routeside corridors providing easy access to new job quarters near schools[8][9][10]. Today little remains except long defunct businesses such as Goudreau's general store closed in 2009[11], replaced by Lowe's Home Hardware,[12] while adjacent residences have been remodeled into high-end apartments/condos Morningside Drive bordering Druid Hills[13], Vineyard Place [14] just across I-285 exit 16B operated by Apple Inc., Coca Cola 600 South off I-285 exit 17A operates vacated by JBL Enterprises[15], former Lumberjacks convenience store building now used as Gwinnett Crossing Apartments about ½ mile east on US 301 past I-85exit 173D features Target Super Center open 24/7
