In the early 1800s, Pooler was a small community located in what is now southeastern Georgia. The town was founded by African Americans and Native Americans who were forced to work in the nearby cotton fields. Ammunition production began in Pooler in 1838, and it continued to be a important local industry until the end of World War II. Ammunition production at Pooler began with shot guns and pistols. later on, rifles, machineguns, artillery pieces, mortars, rockets and grenades were produced. In 1915-16, a ammunition plant was built which became one of the largest in the country. During World War I (1914-1918), many American soldiers died due to shellshock caused by exposure to munitions contaminated with mustard gas. After World War I ended, much of Pooler’s manufacturing capability went away because of Prohibition (1920-1924). However, some ammunition still remains today including case intonation tools for firearms and components for grenade launchers

By 1800, European countries were beginning to form treaties with other nations in order to protect their borders against potential enemies such as Russia and Napoleon Bonaparte. This led to increased demand for ammunition throughout Europe, which caused prices for firearms to increase significantly. As civilization progressed and technology advanced, so too did missiles such as cannons and rockets become more popular; however, cartridges continued play an important role in weaponry until the development of digital printing technology made them nearly obsolete in 2000 AD.
In 1865, the Union army captured a supply depot at Harper's Ferry, Virginia. This depot was used to arm rebel soldiers and munitions were stockpiled there. In 1871, the Union army burned this depot to prevent its contents from falling into Confederate hands.

The first permanent settler in Pooler was John Pooler, who arrived in 1795. In 1802 General James Wilkinson founded a post office here and named it after him. The post office continued to be open until 1865. In 1846 Heman Waygood founded a cotton plantation here and named it after himself. The Waygoods were influential figures in early Pooler history and are buried there along with other notable residents such as Judge Wm Troup and banker Jno Pritchard. In 1868 Drury built a two-story white frame house here which he called "the Mansion". He served as medical director of Forsyth Hospital from 1870 to 1893 and later became its president and CEO. In 1915 he donated land for what is now the University of South Alabama School of Medicine at pooler Campus (now known as Emory University School of Medicine).
