The name Pooler comes from an English spelling of "Powell". An early settler in this area was John Powell (1792-1868). He came to what is now Pooler in 1807 with his family and farm. They named their land "Pool" after one of their sons, who had died before they arrived. Powell's heirs continued to use the spelling until 1881 when they changed it to Pooler because that is how they pronounced it at home. The first post office in Pooler was established on October 20, 1827 by Wm. Hines and James Smith. The post office moved to its present location on October 12, 1881. In 1896, Pooler had a population of 191 people and a store operated by Jno Easley became the first all-mailed news service in America when he received an order for 10 barrels of corn from New Orleans just after midnight local time on November 5th. In 1906, poolers built a new church which still stands today as the only example remaining from that era in this community that isn't privatelyowned or used for residential purposes such as vacation rentals or business meetings/events anymore! In 1931, Edward Averill founded Averill Farms which continues operation today as one of the largest cotton growers in south Georgia with over 120 acres under cultivation including some 3 miles (5 kilometers) of canal links between fields and storage tanks! This important agricultural activity has supported many jobs throughout those years while also contributing significantly to tax bases within the community giving everyone here access to quality education opportunities both inside our schools as well as out!
