Perry is a small town in northwest Georgia, located on the Chattahoochee River. The population was 3,899 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Athens-Clarke County School District. Perry is named after General John C. Perry, who served as Commander of American forces in Europe during World War I and who later became a U.S. Senator from Georgia. The first settler in Perry was James Hargrave, who built a log cabin near present day Perry in 1814. The first school in the area was established in 1825 by Mrs. Anna Purdy with twelve students and two teachers; it served as a farm school until 1829 when it moved to what is now the old post office building on Cemetery Road (now US 11). In 1830, Rev J W Burch purchased land adjacent to what is now Main Street for $2 per acre and began development of what would become Perry Village - an agricultural center that continues to exist today. In 1859, General John C. Perry arrived in Georgia from Illinois with his brigade of troops to help fight against secessionist forces under Stonewall Jackson at Antietam Creek; he soon became known as one of America's most distinguished military commanders and helped lead Georgians into Union service during the Civil War; he ultimately lost his life at Appomattox Court House days after Confederate troops surrendered unconditionally.)
