Perry was founded in 1824 by George Washington Perry and is currently the county seat of Perry County, Georgia. The town of Perry was named for General George Washington Perry, who fought in the War of 1812. The first settler in what is now Perry County was James Fenton, who built a cabin on the present site of downtown in 1825. The first store in what is now Perry County opened its doors in 1830. In 1834, John Pritchett established a sawmill here and began to produce lumber for the construction industry. Other early businesses include a blacksmith shop, bakery, and gin distillery. In 1853, Ladd & Company became the first post office in what is today Perry County when it opened at Second Street and Martin Road. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Confederate forces burned down Fort Adair as part of an effort to starve Union troops into submission. The fort stood until 1865 when it surrendered to Union forces following the Battle of Atlanta. After the war ended, many new businesses were established here including several hotels and restaurants which continue to operate today. In 1901, local resident Atherton Wofford donated land south of downtown for use as an airport which later became known as Atlanta-Hartsfield International Airport (AAL). Today's downtown area includes several buildings from this period including Wofford's Store and Bank building which still stands today and has been used as a museum since 1966; Grady United Methodist Church; Armstrong Building; South Side Baptist Church; First Baptist Church (now Home Depot); and Fourth Avenue Baptist Church (now Peachtree City Hall).
