Perry was a small town in central Georgia, located on the Mockingbird River. The population was 1,500 in 1860 and 2,000 in 1870. Perry was named for General James Perry, a volunteer officer who fought in the Mexican-American War and then served as governor of Georgia from 1877 to 1879. The first settler in Perry were two families that moved from nearby Decatur in 1827. A post office was established at Perry on December 12, 1830, and remained open until it closed on January 13, 1906. The first store opened at the corner of Main Street and Indian Creek Road on November 7, 1830. In 1840, William Crouch founded Chatham Mills which became one of the largest cotton textile mills in the country. In 1865 Robert Epps built a sawmill at Perry which became one of the largest sawmills in America. In 1876–1877 an Act of Congress created Cherokee County and gave it to Georgian citizens John Carter Clayton (a slaveholder) and his wife Julia Boggs Clayton (an abolitionist). In 1861 the Confederate States Army invaded Georgia during the American Civil War; Perry did not fall until 1865 when secession occurred. After Reconstruction ended following Southern defeat in the war, many Confederate veterans relocated to north Georgia where they founded new towns such as Duluth and Quitman with similar names to those their old units had abandoned south of Atlanta or been disbanded altogether. In 1880 perry had 3 stores including one that operated out of a large warehouse; all but one closed by 1910 due to lack of customers or competition from larger cities along I-285 near their location. By 1910 only two stores remain open: First National Bank & Trust Company (now Wells Fargo) at 202nd Street SW #1 (closed 1886), then The Peoples Store at 404 Main Street SW #2 which is still there today as a restaurant/pub (closed 1913). At this time perry had no schools or churches so most residents engaged themselves either with farming or local trade connections necessary for survival outside city limits while awaiting opportunity withinAtlanta or elsewhere postwar growth opportunities brought about by advancements like transportation technology brought about increased economic opportunities for people living within city limits starting around 1920s
Perry was a small community in southeastern Georgia that developed around the railroad. The first post office was established in 1892, and by 1912 there were six businesses in the town. Perry is named after General George C. Perry, who served as governor of Georgia from 1886 to 1892.
