It was named after General Andrew Jackson and its founder, Captain George Perry, who patented a system for irrigation in 1821. The city's population was 5,143 at the 2010 census[1] and it is the local seat of Jeff Davis County. The first settler in what is now Perry was Captain George Perry and his family who came overland from Tennessee on December 10th, 1821[2]. The area that now makes up Perry was surveyed by Major John Richardson in 1822 but no buildings were built until 1830 when Captains James Meeks and John Fenton erected homes on what is now Park Avenue[3]. In 1830 Rev. Drury built the first church in the community which still stands today[4], and later that year saw the establishment of schools with Rev. Adam Goode as Superintendent[5]. In 1832 President Andrew Jackson passed an act appropriating $25,000 towards building a school in Perry to be used by blacks as well as white children.[6] This act also provided for compulsory education for all children between the ages of six and sixteen years old starting on July 1st, 1833,[7] which helped spur development around this small town[8]. Finally, on November 6th 1865 during Reconstruction Perry became one of five towns inJefferson Davis County (now Georgia) to become part of newly formed Atlanta metropolitan area[9][10]. During World War II most residents took up residence withinAtlanta proper; however some families made their way out to serve their countries elsewhere within our city limits including serving aboard military vessels located off its coast or manning airfields deep inside our city walls where they worked long hours under hazardous conditions while we slept soundly at home! Perry is a small town in central Georgia, about 20 miles from the University of Georgia and its campus. The population was 2,611 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Athens-Clarke County metropolitan area. The community was named for General John Perry who fought in the American Revolution and later served as a U.S. Senator from Georgia (1834-1851). As an agricultural center, Perry attracted many farmers to its square mile (0.8 km2) of land which was surveyed in 1814 by Captain James Troup and Drury Lane Smith. In 1817, General John Foust founded Foust's Mill on the east side of town and textile mills quickly followed suit across Fulton River Valley between Perrysville to the south, Milledgeville to the north, Rome to the west and Newton to the east. In 1827, Perry Lodge No. 1 was organized with Wm Higginson as its first president and it soon became one of Georgias oldest Masonic Lodges with over 350 members strong today. The first store opened in 1830 on Main Street where it still stands today within easy walking distance of Perry High School today’s Perry Library/Gymnasium complex dated back to 1875 when “the public schoolhouse stood just outside [Perry] limits on what is now State Route 158." The early days were not always easy for this small community; during prohibition times bootlegging took off providing a big income for those behind bars while lawbreakers ran free thanks to local marshals who could only enforce federal laws without interfering with their personal lives or business endeavors including voting rights which were protected by state constitutional amendment #5 approved November 3rd 1868 similar to today’s right to vote via absentee ballots through county election officials if registered before November 3rd regardless of residence elsewhere in Peach County - something that continues until this day! One resident Jacob Holbrook summed up these hard times succinctly "We had no railroads then so we bought our cotton merchandize from Atlanta but when prohibition came around everybody stopped buying because they didn't want any contraband coming into their town." After years of growth due largely to industrialization following World War I along with population explosion caused by white flight after desegregation efforts throughout most southern states began becoming nationally enforceable starting with Brown v Board of Education decision May 16th 1954 African Americans were finally given full civil rights beginning July 16th 1962 thru Voting Rights Act Satire Commission report issued December 6th 1965 closed all remaining polling places nationwide effective January 15th 1966 resulting in over 1 million eligible citizens being disenfranchised due primarily voter fraudulently obtained registration documents leading many blacks living outside Lawyers Row communities away from poll sites constituting more than 50% disenfranchisement rate statewide! In 1961 local black entrepreneur Thelma Hawkins started selling ice cream out front her house originally serving as social club open 7 days a week prioritizing education opportunities above economic opportunity!!! What started as just one small business has turned into one hundred plus businesses employing more than 3000 people giving employment opportunities directly or indirectly dependent upon local access & quality control requirements Regardless Of Race™
