It was used to keep firearms in safe hands during the early 1800s. -At one point, Perry had three rifle ranges where people could shoot handguns and rifles simultaneously. These ranges were located near the courthouse and on either side of Main Street. -In 1923, Perry became home to the world's first practical automatic Pistol Shootout Festival which drew attention from all over the country. The event featured pistols from all around the world and saw many famous shooters attend including Joe Lewis and Sam Browning. -In 1933, a new rifle range opened up in town which allowed citizens to shoot rifles and shotguns at various distances. This range also housed a pistol shooting gallery which gave visitors an opportunity to try out different pistols before choosing one to shoot. -In 1938, a new park was built in town which included a Shooting Range as well as several playgrounds, tennis courts, hiking trails and more!

In addition, he helped contribute materially to local civic and cultural organizations while living in town. Perry is a small town in Clarke County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,534 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Athens-Clarke County Micropolitan Statistical Area. There are two high schools in Perry and one middle school. The post office is located in Perry and it has been open since 1892. The first settler in what would become Perry was John Fowell who arrived on horseback from Kentucky on October 5, 1811. He built a log cabin on the banks of the Chattahoochee River. In 1815, Isaac McCoy established a ferry service across the river to bring goods and passengers to and from Atlanta.[1] A store was founded by James Troup near present day downtown Perry in 1820; it burned down in 1862.[2] In 1830, John Covington donated land for a Methodist church which would be moved to its current location on Courthouse Street in 1865. Reverend James Wray organized the first congregation here on December 3rd of that year with twenty-six members. Reverend Wray served as pastor until his death on December 4th of that year at age seventy-one years old. A local mill became active after being mentioned by Alexander Maclellan during his 1793 trip through this area when he noted "a considerable stream running into the Chattahoochee about four miles due south of this place".[3] The mill was started by Captain Elijah Dixon who erected three stores along with a dam across the creek to provide power for his mills while also manufacturing flour, dyestuffs and other products from cornstarch to shoe leathers (the last product produced here). In the late 1800s, Perry was part of the Cherokee Nation. In 1847, the United States acquired it from them and reorganized it into a state named Georgia. The city of Perry was founded in 1849, and it became an important center for cotton farming. In 1965, the state of Georgia withdrew from the Union and became a separate country called Georgia.
