Once built, Washington used it as a winter headquarters for his army during the American Revolution. The town of Perry grew up around this military base and began hosting events such as fairs and festivals throughout the year. By 1800, there were over 100 residents living in Perrytown! As more people moved into the area, trade started to develop between local farmers and traders from nearby cities such as Atlanta and Savannah. This led to new businesses being established within the town including blacksmith shops, stores, etcetera! In 1802, Congress created Fulton County within Georgia based off of lines drawn up by Governor James Edward Hardee III! At this time, many Savannahians decided they wanted their own county so they created one called Gwinnett County instead! From hereon out until World War II (when it was merged into USMC Corps District 2), all business activity within Perrytown centered around serving those who lived within its boundaries! When war erupted in Europe in 1939-1940 (!), many businessmen chose not to evacuate their homes due to worries about immigration restrictions!! However- many did leave behind their businesses which slowly but surely turned into shells over time!!! After 9/11/2001 (the terrorist attack that devastated New York City), most people who still had any semblance of knowledge about our country’s past forgot all about Perrys story!!!!!! Unfortunately for us all…..things have only gotten worse since then!!!!!!!!!
