Perry is a small town in the southern U.S. state of Georgia, located on the Chattahoochee River near the Alabama border. The population was 2,944 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta-Fulton County metropolitan area and is considered to be a bedroom community for nearby Atlantas downtown business district. Perry was founded in 1807 by Captain James Perry as a trading post on the Chattahoochee River. The Perry family has been in control of Perry since 1799 when Captain John Perry's grandson, George Perry Sr., became its first settler. In 1827, General Andrew Jackson appointed Captains John Fenton and Benjamin Hawkins as commissioners to purchase land from Captains George Perry Jr., Samuel Chase and James Robertson for $5,000. This purchase opened up much of what is now known as north central Georgia for settlement by white men. In 1828, General Jackson ordered Colonel James Halliday to establish a road from Athens to Milledgeville (the then capital of Georgia). With this road came increased traffic and development within Perry itself; construction began on what would eventually become First Avenue which runs through town today. By 1830, local residents had constructed about 20 houses and two stores with an average size of 3 feet square (100 square inches). Captain James Ayer first arrived in 1835 and built a log cabin which he named "Ayers Station" after himself and his brother-in-law Major John Ayer who had helped finance the building project along with Captain James Batey (of Boston) and others from that era's frontier settlements like Tellico Creek Colony south of Chattanooga. By 1840, most people living within range of First Avenue had erected homes; including several families who started operating their own businesses: Methodist Episcopal Church (founded in 1840), BaptistChurch (founded in 1842), Male Female Store (1843), Cotton gin (1845), Widow Brown’s trade store (1846), Post Office(established February 1st 1850) . . . Some early settlers such as Ebenezer Hogg established cotton plantations near present day Roswell where they grew crops until 1865 when they sold their land to Cochran Bros., Baird Brothers & Company

Today, the population is less than 1,000 people and its only industry is agriculture which produces corn and soybeans. The history of Perry begins with the construction of a ferry crossing over the Chattahoochee River from Georgia to Alabama in 1814. This ferry service allowed goods and passengers between the two states for a short distance before coming back across the river on another ferry making it difficult for either side to control traffic. This caused much inconvenience for both sides and led to the foundation of what would become Perry as a town in 1828. One of many early businesses in Perry was an apothecary where Drs George Agnew and Elijah Hicks opened their shop in 1830. They sold medicines, seeds, flowers, cigars, etc., until they closed up shop around 1840 due to low demand from customers within Georgia or Alabama at that time
