Perry is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,826 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The name of the town may be derived from the Creek words "Hahaha" (a mockingCry) and "Iowan" (from Illinois). In 1802, General James WASHINGTON passed through this area on his way to battle with Mexico City and stopped at Perry for lunch before continuing his journey. The first settler in Perry was George Washington who arrived in 1795. He built a cabin near present day downtown Perry on the Chattahoochee River. In 1807, Captain John Smith ran into trouble while exploring this region and camped at what is now Perry Hall on May 12th,1807 during his search for a route east to find Georgia's new capital city of Montgomery. This location became known as Perry Hall because of its similarity to an Indian wigwam or “prairie house” that had stood there since pre-European times. In 1812, Captains John Smith and Andrew Johnson met here while they were exploring this same area for supplies when they discovered what would later become known as the Jones–Bryan Treaty Site which included land east of where current day Perry sits including parts of what is now Broadview Heights and GreenAcres neighborhoods south of Interstate 85W. On November 14th, 1812 both captains signed a treaty northeast of present day Downtown Perry with Cherokee Nation leader eligible to receive $5,000 for ceding all their eastern lands north of US Highway 285 eastward including much along I-85W today's Druid Hills neighborhood west of Turner Road/Highway 85E today's Lithonia neighborhood southwest of Peachtree Street/I-285W? Today's Decatur community northwest of Alpharetta village southeast off Brixton Road/I-285W
