Perry is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 5,859 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The name "Perry" comes from a Cherokee word meaning "place where there are sweet potatoes." Perry was platted in 1814 by General James Hance, and named for him. The community first began to develop as arailroads converged on the area: the Georgia and Florida Railroad (now CSX) reached Perry in 1868, while also Georgian Railway ran through it in 1870. In 1875, Perry became one of twenty townships within Decatur County when that county was created from parts of Fulton and Gwinnett Counties. In 1896, the town's post office was established at what is now its junction with US Route 1A (the modern Perly Road). In 1907, construction began on the Peachtree Creek Bridge over Peachtree Creek which connected Perry with Roswell. The bridge became operational on October 16th of that year and cost $1 million to build; it remains Perry's longest bridge by length or price tag. On December 26th of that year, an additional road connection between I-285 and Roswell was opened when the Peachtrees FerryRoad connecting I-285 east to Interstate 205 west opened its lanes east of Roswell Airport; this route has since been renamed after then-Governor Sonny Perdue. In 1928–29 during Governor John F Kennedy's term as governor of Georgia he traveled through Perry on his way to Valdosta State University in Valdosta; during his speech given at halftime of a game against Mercer University he mentioned that this would be his final visit to GA before leaving for good after two terms as governor - which made him only the second U S president ever to visit GA after Andrew Johnson .
