Perry began as a small settlement near what is now Candler Park on October 15, 1814 when three families – those of John Forster, James Hickey and their two children – left British Columbia for America with six others under Capt. John Browning's command. They were wagon drivers for traders along the Georgia Railroad from Decatur to Athens before reaching Macon in 1825. On July 7, 1829 they founded a village on what is now State Route 471 just east of present day Perry where they built a log cabin named "Grace". In 1830-31 Baptist pastor Robert Lewis opened his first church in what is now Candler Park (the current site of Perry). In 1840-41 Methodist preacher Wm. Pritchett preached here from an old whitesmith shop that he had purchased adjacent to Candler Park Lake before moving it elsewhere in 1835-36 due to construction work nearby on DeKalb Street which soon replacedCandler Park Lake as Atlanta's main public body water source after Dunwoody Ave., then Peachtree Road became elevated ground outside city limits in 1886 removed access thereto allowing development there until private ownership took over following World War II; see also: de Kalb Avenue history). Reverend Pritchett later served as pastor at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church which merged into First African Baptist Temple (FAME) here in 1951 forming today's largest black denomination headquartered within city Limits since its founding more than 150 years ago! Reverend Pritchett died suddenly November 5th 1909 aged 78 years old; Funeral services were held at Emmanuel AME Zion Church with Revs Wm Pepper (Orthodox rabbi), Ethel Payne (pianist/composer), Una Griggs(dentist/clinic manager/widow of Rev Ernest Payne(1872-1956)), Dr J Fenton (physician), Mrs Bessie Massey(nurse/ social worker) conducted by Rev G C Hamlin who officiated with military honors party including drum majors Rufus King & Edwin Herndon

The first settler in Perry was John Addison who arrived in 1786. The city was named for General David Perry who fought with General Washington during the American Revolution. In 1802, James Auld land grant of 302 acres to Captains John Addison and George Hartsfield recommended that Perry be named after General David Perry as part of a plan to improve transportation between Atlanta and points south. In 1814, Captain John Addison sold 375 acres (18 square miles) of his land grant to Moses Morton for $1,000. The town growth began with many farmers moving into the community from surrounding farms due to good soil conditions and cheap prices on cotton goods available from traders in Philadelphia. Moses Morton ran a grocery store and ferry service across the Chattahoochee River until he lost money in 1830 when wagon trains started coming downriver instead of going upriver like he had promised them. He then decided to build a steamboat terminal on what is now its east side so that passengers could get off their boats at various points around town before going downriver again another hour or so each way to Chattanooga or other destinations such as Decatur or Athens
Perry, Georgia is located in the United States of America. It is named after General James Perry who fought in the Mexican-American War and was a recipient of the Medal of Honor for his actions. The town was established in 1847 by Confederate General John C. Gardiner.
