The first permanent settler in Perry was John Lorenzo Perry who arrived in 1799. In 1837, James Gadsden built his plantation on the north side of the Cotton Belt Road near present day Peachtree Road and Highway 770. The Perry family owned and operated this plantation until 1916 when it passed to the Gadsden family. In 1865, Confederate General Jubal Early attacked Union forces at Perrytown near present day Lakewood Drive and Swift Creek Road, east of modern day Perrysboro. According to local legend, Early's forces burned down many homes in Perrytown before being driven back by artillery fire from Union General William Tecumseh Sherman's army. In 1872, Abraham Lincoln nominated Jno P. Banks for Governor of Georgia after he won the election by a wide margin over incumbent David Wilks. Banks was confirmed by the U.S Senate but declined to take office due to illness; he died two years later without having accomplished his full term as governor). In 1893, construction began on what would become Atlanta's first major railroad terminal which became known as "the rail junction" because so many trains stopped there for refueling or changing cars before continuing their journey northeastward across Georgia and North Carolina
