Peachtree City is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 31,452 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Peachtree City was founded in 1837 by General James Wilkinson as a small community on the Chattahoochee River east of present-day Decatur. The town name derived from English captain John Peake's landing there on October 15, 1795 during his exploration of the lower Chattahoochee River region. Creek people had been living and trading in what is now Peachtree City for centuries before white settlers arrived in large numbers in the early 1800s. In 1837, Wilkinson donated land to form the town site and named it after him. The first post office was established in 1838, and growth continued until 1850 when Cherokee Nation Removal began which caused many African Americans to move away from agricultural villages throughout Georgia to new plantations near Chattanooga or Savannah. One hundred black families established themselves within the limits of Peachtree City by 1860; however most of these were relocated to other townships within Fulton County due to numerous proscription laws passed during this time period against slavery which hindered black migration into rural areas outside ofAtlanta proper. In 1862 Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest attacked and burned Union Colonel William Troup's plantation northeast of town; following this attack some residents chose not to return home after learning that their homes would be spared if they aided Union forces during the Civil War. By 1865 much of what remained of downtown Peachtree City had been destroyed by fire resulting from Confederate artillery bombardment while Confederate General Robert Ewell's troops mopped up any remaining Union forces around town prior to withdrawing back into Atlanta late that night. In 1892 businessman Waverly Gibbs leased 300 acres (12 hectares) north of downtown for a streetcar line called "The Addition" which connected downtown with Dekalb Avenue on the south side of campus at Hawkins Road/Dekalb Street whereupon development rapidly ensued with pecan production becoming an important industry early on followed by heavy retail development over time culminating with a major shopping mall built adjacent thereto starting in 1984 called Gwinnett Mall which has since grown into one of Atlanta's largest mixed use developments comprising several thousand jobs including retailers, movie theaters, restaurants and healthcare facilities along with more than 100 residential units targeting suburbanites who live close by but don't have easy access to Downtown Atlanta attractions like MARTA or I-85/I-285TP The mall continues redevelopment today despite being nearly 20 years old
Peachtree City was founded in 1837 by Rev. John Peachtree, a Methodist minister. The city grew rapidly during the early years of the 19th century, and by 1869 it had reached its peak population size of 100,000 people. However, immigration and industrial growth gradually began to reverse the trend of Peachtree City’s growth, and by the late 19th century the city had fallen behind other northern Atlanta communities in terms of economic development. In 1906 Peachtree City became an incorporated town and experienced a period of revitalization which saw it become one of the most influential cities in the region. However, economic decline followed in the 1920s and 1930s, culminating in a series of bankruptcies that led to PeachtreeCity’s formal loss of municipal status in 1933. Today, PeachtREE CITY is still an important cultural and educational center within its own right-hand side suburbia – home to many local businesses as well as several high-rise apartment buildings – but it has largely lost its market appeal over recent decades due to competition from nearby neighborhoods with more advanced infrastructure.
