In 1806, Creek Indian Chief Oconee destroyed most of Natchez after accusing white settlers of stealing his land. Despite this setback, Natchez continued to grow as a commercial center until 1829 when it was incorporated as a city under the name of "Peachtree City." In 1860, John Fenton purchased 1/4 mile (0.6 km) of swampy land east of present-day Peachtree City from William Hartsfield for $1 million dollars which he used to create what is now downtown Peachtree City. Fenton named his new town after himself – Georgians first met him here while traveling through Georgia on their way to Tennessee).Fenton's development helped spur growth in downtown PeachtREE CITY throughout the early 19th century and into the mid-19th century when railroads cameminentely into play in Atlantas economy. In 1861–1862 Confederate soldiers burned down buildings in downtown Natchez during their attempt to quell anti-Confederate sentiment across the state following Confederate victory at Battle Of Shiloh that year.. Some historians claim that this event may have been motivated by financial reasons since Union forces had already taken control of much ofAtlanta after that battle which made rebuilding much more expensive than it would have been if not for these destructive fires; however others maintain that Confederates may have believed they were fighting for their people and not against Yankees - an attitude which persists even today among some Atlantans who view secession as an honorable effort In 1865–1866 Confederate troops invadedGA & burned plantations near Kennesaw Mountain; this event led to increased racial tension between whites & black residents in GA
