The city's only professional vintner, John Doar, moved his business to Chattanooga in 1857. In 1870 Peachtree City had a population of just over 20,000; it declined again until 1880 when it reached its low point at 12,000. With the arrival of railroads and new residents in the early 19th century Peachtree City began to rebound; it reached a population of over 50,000 by 1900. However, with World War I looming large Peachtree City saw another wave of decline as many people left for military service or other opportunities abroad. By 1920 Peachtree City had a population under 25 thousand; it peaked at 30 thousand before declining again until 1930. Since then it has slowly regained some stability, reaching an estimated population of 24 thousand as of 2010
