Peachtree City is named after General James Peachtree who fought in the American Revolution and founded Augusta, Georgia. Peachtree City began as a small community near what is now Centennial Park on Decatur Street in 1884. Settlement grew slowly due to lack of transportation and water availability until World War II when Peachtree City became an important center for aircraft production at nearby Grissom Air Force Base. After the war, growth accelerated as businesses moved into new buildings and residents married one another within the close-knit community. In 1990, Peachtree City incorporated as a city under state law which increased its legal authority over local government affairs and made it easier for municipal corporations to make decisions about spending money and services such as fire protection or public schools.
Peachtree City is a city in Cobb County, Georgia, United States. The population was 24,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what is now Peachtree City was James McMillan and his family who arrived in 1825. They built a log cabin on the present site of downtown Peachtree City. In 1830, they erected a cabin known as "Mountain Top". In 1835, McMillan's wife died and he married Elizabeth (née Ross). They had six children: James (1836-1911), John (1838-1924), Martha Jane (1840-1922), William (1842-1920), and Alfred (1844-1927). Elizabeth McMillan née Ross raised her five children with help from their father until his death in 1859 when she became Mrs. Jno Hinesworth also of Cobb County and raised another two children with him: Anna Stonington Hinesworth born 1865 and Johnnie Hinesworth born 1867. Mrs. Jno Hinesworth later married Drury Ladd of Decatur, Alabama and had four more children: Loretta Mabel Ladd born 1889; Clarence Edwin Ladd born 1893; Emma Mae Ladd 1895; Wilbur Allen Ladd 1897. Drury Ladd moved to Mobile, Alabama in 1907 before moving back to Decatur where he died in 1955. His wife continued to live there until her death in 1984. One daughter, Loretta Mabel Ladd lives today outside of Atlanta near Decatur/West Point High School
