Peachtree City is located in the northwest corner of Fulton County and is bordered by Clayton to the north, Roswell to the east, Marietta to the south and Powder Springs to the west. The area that would become Peachtree City was first settled by European Americans in 1814 when James McMillan and his family arrived from Scotland. The name "Peachtree" originates from a tree that grew on their farm near present-day downtown Peachtree City. By 1820, many other families had moved into what would become Peachtree City including John McLarty and his two sons who founded McLarty Coal & Coke Company. In 1825, George Washington Carver bought land adjacent to what is now downtown Peachtree City for $1 million dollars which he used as part of a cattle drive from Mississippi into Alabama where he was then governor. When he returned home in 1830, Carver donated some of this land for a new town called Carverville which became an important center for cotton production during the antebellum period. In 1840–41, William Hartsfield purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) of land southwest of present-day downtown Peachtree City from Andrew Johnson for $2 million dollars which served as the nucleus around which future development took place within city limits. At this time there were only five or six homes in what would eventually become PeachtrieCityites numbered about 60 at most with most residents working on farms or supplying goods needed by surrounding towns such as Clayton or Roswell during this early stage of Atlanta's growth). In 1875 Jno Pemberton began construction on northeast side of town off Creek Road betweenwhat are now Pryor Boulevard and Lenox Avenue using money given him by General Alfred Thayer Mahon who had purchased land nearby including parts of what are currently Midtown Atlanta. The street names later reverted back to their original locations: Pemberton Street (now Lenox Avenue), McNeely Street (now McDonough Avenue), Harrell Streets (now Worth streets), Dunphy Streets (now Moreland streets), Slaughter Streets (now Euclid Avenue). To date, these streets remain among Atlanta's oldest commercial corridors with significant architecture andhistoric significance dating back more than one hundred years!
