Norcross is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 20,895 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Fulton County and home to the Norcross shopping center. The city's nickname "The Athens of the South" comes from its close relationship with Athens, Georgia. Norcross was founded on December 12, 1820 by General James Hickey as a clearing station for squatters who had arrived in what is now Fulton County during the American Revolution. Its first postmaster was John Darnell. In 1824, Norcross became part of Cherokee Nation and it did not become a town until 1870 when it joined the City of Atlanta through a merger process that followed Reconstruction after the Civil War. The first white settler in Norcross was Jesse Pemberton who purchased land on November 21, 1827 from John Hawkins for $2,000 cash and two slaves. Pemberton named his farm "Pembertonsville". In 1830–31, David Humphreys built a small log cabin near present-day Norcross on what is now Oakwood Road (now Patton Boulevard). Humphreys operated a crop duster business out of his cabin before he married Rachelle Sikes in 1832; they would have three children: James (1833-1902), Rachelle (1835-1909) and Isadora (1838-1920). Reverend Drury Davison officiated at their wedding ceremony on October 14, 1832 at First Presbyterian Church in Norcross – one year afterAtlanta's incorporation as an independent city under charter granted by Georgia Governor Nathan Bedford Forrest The following year saw another early pioneer to come to Norcross – Elijah Barnes – he purchased 1/4 mile east of present day Griffin Avenue from Samuel Burch for $10 cash and four enslaved Africans . Barnes renamed his tract "Eliensborough". Barnes' purchase marked the beginning of what would become one of Atlanta's most vibrant African American communities - Ebenezer Baptist Church served as its first church building and overcrowding within that facility led to its donation toatlanta black college in 1865 where students then could study free from racial discrimination which began appearing soon thereafter throughout Atlantas educational landscape . banker Nicholas Douglass organized many businesses within Chattahoochee Valley during this time including Jno Cockerill & Co., later known asDouglass Coffee House fame

The first permanent settler in Norcross was John Ownby in 1824. He built a cabin on an old cornfield and named it "Norcross." When he died, his wife inherited the land and continued to farm it. In 1828, Alexander Wilson moved from Glasgow, Scotland to Norcross and started a blacksmith shop. This was the beginning of what would become one of America's most diverse communities; many people from around the world lived here at that time. In 1839, soon after President James K. Polk had approved a bill granting citizenship to all slaves within specified boundaries (the so-called "Emancipation Proclamation"), two men came to Norcross from Savannah with news about this great news: their master had been freed! They were teenagers at the time and called themselves "Black Jack" and "John Brown." They immediately set about organizing their new community by erecting a courthouse and schoolhouse near where they now live (now known as White Hall). The citizens of Norcross quickly became excited about this new development and donated land for a public square which still stands today. Norcross also played an important role during Reconstruction; many African Americans who had been free before Union troops entered Georgia worked in local businesses or farm hands while awaiting their own freedom under General Nathan Bedford Forrest's Confederates. In 1865, after Confederate General Robert ELee surrendered at Appomattox Court House in Virginia, many Atlantans took up arms against the Confederacy - some joined Union army units while others chose to stay behind entirely. Many Norrossians also decided not to return home when hostilities ended; some remained in Georgia until well into the 20th century as farmers or workers on rural plantations or small towns throughout southeast Alabama and Mississippi
