The economy of Norcross is based primarily on agriculture which continues to be a major force in the community today. Some notable products produced by local farmers include cornmeal and cottonseed; also exported are chicken eggs and cheese from nearby Pascagoula County. Additionally, many small businesses have been developed over the years in order to support this sector of the local economy including convenience stores (Bargain Barns), auto parts stores (Pitney Bowes), daycare centers (Doris Day School) and more recently - restaurants (Lone Star BBQ). Today's norcross skyline can be easily seen from miles away as two large buildings - Atlanta– Johnson City Airport & Southern Bell Tower - dominate what once was farmland now home to several thousand residents making their homes within walking distance of all that they need or want without leaving their doorstep! It is the only incorporated community in south Fulton County and is located on the north bank of the Chattahoochee River, about 15 miles east of Atlanta. The town was founded by Welsh immigrants in 1824 as part of a move to escape religious persecution in Wales. The first store and post office were established here in 1826. In 1865, Norcross became an unincorporated community when it merged with nearby Paulding Township. In 1919, Norcross became an official civil township of Fulton County after being granted its own government by Georgia General Assembly. In 1925, it was redesignated asNorcross by Act No. 7 of that year which designated it as one of three townships comprising the city of Atlanta proper (the other two being Peachtree City and Roswell). According to the 2000 United States Census there were 1,545 people living in Norcross; 812 households out of which 36% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 60% were married couples living together, 13% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33% were non-families. 24% of all households were made up of individuals and 11% had someone living alone who was 65 years old or older. The average household size was 2 bedroom/1 bedroom and 49/person
