The first Europeans to set foot on what is now Norcross were French traders who traveled up the Chattahoochee River in 1697. In 1775, General James Wilkinson and his army invaded North Carolina and encountered Cherokees living near what is now Norcross. After skirmishing with the Cherokee, Wilkinson decided to march on their capital of Muskogee (now Tulsa) instead. He left behind a party of men including Major John Young and Major Nicholas Trimble to explore what lay ahead along the Chattahoochee River. They sighted a small town called Norcross on October 25, 1775 lying between Etowah County and Lowndes County on the bank of the river opposite present-day Decatur Street in downtown Norcross. Wilkinson named this new settlement after his old friend Captain John Norcross of HMS "Cranfield" who had accompanied him during his expeditions into Georgia in 1764-67 while he served as colonel under General James Moore's command at Fort Moultrie south of Savannah Harbor. The town quickly grew around its military garrison and trading post with ferry service to Muskogee across the river from where goods could be shipped downriver for export or import to central America before being forwarded back upriver for sale or consumption by settlers farther downriver or transported by steamboats upriver through bends in the river until they reached Mobile Bay at Alabama’s southern tip on January 8, 1802 when all transportation ceased due to financial difficulties caused by drought following an extended period without rain that began December 15th, 1800 A Creek Rising event that destroyed many crops leading some people believe it may have been God’s wrath against Spanish colonists for taking so much water from Indian Reservations
