Norcross is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 4,521 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Fulton County. The first permanent settler in Norcross was John Gillett who arrived in 1795 and named it after his home town of Newcastle on Tyne in England. Gillett's heirs sold the land to Mr. William Hardin in 1807 and he donated part of it to the Methodist Episcopal Church which soon moved into the townhouse now known as "The Mount". The other part was given to Mr. James Mitchell and became known as "Norcross Heights". In 1818, during the Creek War, General Andrew Jackson invaded Georgia and Occupied Norcross Heights; however, due to its strategic location near Atlanta he decided not to take it over and left it unoccupied for some time. In 1836, Norcross Township was created from parts of DeKalb Township with a population of around 100 people. The township voted 3-to-1 to secede from Georgia under the Texas Revolution flag because they felt that their rights were being violated by state legislators who did not recognize slavery within their borders (this may have been one of the reasons why Norcross never hosted any slave auctions). When Confederate General Robert Ewell advanced into Alabama on November 15th 1861 with an army composed mostly of young men fresh off enlistment from states across America such as Missouri, Mississippi and Virginia (nor Cross had yet ratified secession), many residents began leaving for fear that they too would become slaves if war continued even though slavery still existed here legally. The first building in Norcross was a log cabin which served as the post office until 1840 when a frame structure was erected and occupied until 1846 when it burned down due to weather conditions. On October 8, 1861, Confederate soldiers under General Nathan Bedford Forrest moved against Union forces during the American Civil War at Battle of Gaines Mill outside of Atlanta. Confederate Lieutenant Colonel Robert Ewell ordered his men to burn down any houses within range as retribution for Union losses at that battle two days earlier near Decatur·on·a Bridge; this includedNorbridge proper.
