Norcross has been home to many local businesses and professionals since its incorporation as a city, including two Fortune 500 companies: Coca-Cola Company and GEICO Corporation. The Norcross Arts District is home to several major cultural attractions including the Atlanta Museum of Art and Philips Arena; it also hosts several smaller museums throughout the year such as the Cobb County Historical Society Museum, which contains an extensive collection of slave artifacts that were kept in storage until sold to museum members in 2000. In recent years, Norcross has seen some redevelopment with the construction of new homes and businesses being built along I-285 near downtown while other areas have seen more light commercial development with restaurants becoming available on courthouse square or near I-285's interchange with I-75/I-16/US–27

It was named for General James Norcross, who had played a major role in the American Revolution. The town gradually grew and prospered until the turn of the century, when it went through a period of decline. In 1907, however, Norcross became part ofAtlantaand its growth resumed. By 1920, the town had reached its peak population size and was considered one of Atlanta's most vibrant communities. However, by the late 1940s, Norross had fallen into decline again and experienced another significant loss in population due to World War II. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, though,Norcross experienced a continual gradual increase in population due to new development along its borders. In 1990, after more than 30 years of decline- which saw it lose over half its population-Norcross regained some degree of popularity as an upscale community with many popular businesses including banks and schools
