Norcross is a small city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 5,023 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Fulton County. In 1916 Norcross became the first town in Fulton County to be annexed into Atlanta. Norcross is part of the Atlanta-Fulton metropolitan area and has a total population of over 8 million people. Norcross was founded by Scotsman Alexander Macdonald in 1817 as a trading post on the Chattahoochee River between what are now Decatur and Smyrna (now Norcross). Macdonald named his post after his home country, Scotland. He sold goods from his store across the river to traders in nearbyAtlanta and Savannah. In 1847, John Todd formed an agreement with Alexander McMillin to sell land east of Norcross for development into what would become Atlanta. The two men developed a scheme to lay out streets parallel to each other and connect their developments withagoals waterways such as Peachtree Creek and Sandy Hook Lake so that residents could access their businesses near either waterway. This plan failed because it was not possible to finance it through credit or land sales alone; Todd had difficulty raising money even from his own resources. A group of businessmen led by James Milledge purchased Todd's interest in the project and began construction on what would become Ponce de Leon Avenue which ran northwest from downtown Atlanta towards Cumberland University before turning southward along Third Street until reaching its junction with Glenwood Road just east of Midtown Center today's Centennial Olympic Park southeast corner Fifth Street/Peachtree Road intersection where Milledge Boulevard meets Interstate 85 today's Douglas Parkway then continuing northeast on Douglas Parkway intersecting GA 400 northbound where it joins Interstate 285 eastbound today's Hawkins Tollroad nowdays I-285W just east of Ponce de Leon Avenue intersection oldGA 300 southbound concurrent US 80 northbound concurrent now I- 285 southbound formerGA 300 northbound concurrent now GA 400 westBound concurrent I-285N

Norcross, Georgia is a small town in Fulton County, Georgia. The population was 5,711 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The downtown area and most of the rural areas are home to several thousand residents. The Norcross community began as a farmstead on a hill in 1837. A post office was established here in 1875; it changed its name to Norcross in 1903. By 1925, when the county was formed, Norcross had a population of 681 people. Other early settlers included John Suggs and his son-in-law James Girdwood who came from Maryland in 1824 and built what is now known as "Suggs' Store." In 1838, Rufus Mims bought land here for $50 and erected a log cabin which he called "Mims' Cabin". In 1840, Jno Pritchard arrived with his family from England and started farming here also. In 1865, John Covington opened what became one of Atlantas first grocery stores: Covingtons Grocery & Liquor store on Commerce Street today's Patton Avenue.. His son James took over this business after John's death in 1916. One of Atlantas earliest farmers - Mathias Weems - died aged 100 years old on May 22nd 2017 courtesy of kindly donations by four local citizens including Al Lewis (aged 97), Addie Sims (aged 95), Vernon Sims (aged 89) and Dora Mae Richardson (age 78).Mathias Weems was buried at Elmwood Cemetery next to his wife Fannie Weems who died young at age 21 when Mathias married her just before she turned 24 years old! There are three Generations left living side by side – EMMA WEEMS 3/4/2018 – VENICE SIMM 3/9/2018 – SAMUEL WEEMS 2/10/2010 – all descendants born within five generations!
